At Florence, we believe that responsible manufacturing and sustainable business practices go hand-in-hand with exploration. We know our gear has to perform, but if that jacket or shirt is made in a way that harms the planet, it’s directly affecting the places we explore.
The environment will continue to change, but our responsibility to make the right choices for the planet will be an ongoing commitment.
Our commitment to performance extends beyond the products themselves—it’s about building a future where high-functioning gear and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. Across nearly our entire product line, we’re shifting toward the use of recycled materials, giving a second life to resources that would otherwise go to waste.
Our aim is to engineer gear that performs at the highest level while minimizing our footprint. We’re constantly exploring innovative partners, materials, and processes that reduce dependency on virgin resources and lower environmental impact without sacrificing durability, comfort, or versatility. By rethinking how our products are made, we’re not only protecting the environments that inspire us—but also ensuring they remain places we can continue to explore for generations to come.
The Pertex® NetPlus® Collection is built from 100% post-consumer recycled fishing nets—diverted from oceans across the world through our partnership with Bureo. By transforming end-of-life nets into high-performance fabrics, we’re reducing ocean plastic pollution while cutting the demand for virgin plastics. These fabrics meet the same rigorous Pertex performance standards you expect, ensuring there’s no compromise on durability, warmth, or weather protection.
By returning worn nets through Bureo’s recycling program, they’re helping protect the waters they depend on. Together, we’re proving that performance gear can be built responsibly, with positive impact at its core.
DWR (durable-water repellent) coating is a standard application on weather-ready jackets, boardshorts and more. The problem? The vast majority of DWR coatings are harmful to the atmosphere due to fluorocarbons – a compound that overtime can degrade the ozone.
As a brand built around marine exploration, DWR is essential.
We couldn’t turn our back on this feature, but we had to find a solution that married performance to sustainability – a happy chemical medium we refer to as ‘responsible chemistry.’
Enter C0 DWR – a DWR that generates ZERO fluorocarbons, and the treatment you’ll find on our gear. It keeps the water off but keeps the ozone and surrounding environment intact.
A Partnership for Preservation
FLORENCE has partnered with the Ocean Conservancy to protect and preserve the waters that connect us all. A portion of every Florence Membership now goes directly toward supporting ocean conservation initiatives—helping safeguard our coastlines, marine life, and the future of our planet’s most vital ecosystem.
For more than 50 years, Ocean Conservancy has been delivering effective, evidence-based solutions for the ocean. The organization unites science, people, and policy to confront the greatest challenges facing our planet today—climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution. Through their annual International Coastal Cleanup, volunteers have removed more than 400 million pounds of trash from beaches and waterways worldwide.
“I grew up here in Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu, and we have grown up in the ocean. From surfing, to diving, to sailing, everything in and around the ocean—and having that personal experience with it—has made me so I wanna protect it because it’s a place I live 80% of my life. For me, I'm excited to partner with the Ocean Conservancy, and I hope that what comes out of this initiative is to see people go out and have their own connections with the ocean.”
— John John Florence
In partnership with Ocean Conservancy, we are dedicated to cleaning and preserving our waterways by donating a portion of every Florence Membership to Ocean Conservancy and their initiatives.
